Only 18 goals in 14 games – coach Gunkel explains the strikers’ slump

Rot-Weiß Oberhausen welcomes VfL Bochum II on Sunday. RWO wants to climb further up the table with a win.

Things have been running smoothly for Rot-Weiß Oberhausen in recent weeks.
Including the cup upset against Rot-Weiss Essen, there has been only one defeat in eleven games. And on the last Regionalliga West match day, RWO achieved something incredible: despite being a man down and trailing 1-2 until the 90th minute, the Kleeblätter managed to celebrate a 3-2 victory at the Stadion am Zoo.
They are currently sixth in the table with six points.

“The joy was immense. It was a very special game that we turned around despite being a man down. But nevertheless, we have to quickly put the game behind us and look ahead. Wuppertal is also a warning sign. Looking at the table, we were the clear favorites. But the league is tight. That also applies to the coming weekend,” says Sebastian Gunkel.
The Oberhausen coach is thinking about Sunday’s match (November 9, 2 p.m.) against VfL Bochum’s U21 team.

We’re still not scoring enough goals. Our midfield and forwards are working very hard for the team. Maybe we’re lacking a little energy in the final third. We need to keep working on that. But I’d also like to emphasize that I’m happy with the boys.

“I really like VfL. I think they’ve been underrated so far and deserve more points. In any case, we’re well prepared and have been warned,“ emphasizes Gunkel, who only has to do without the suspended Drew Murray and Simon Ludwig. ”In addition, we have a few players who are carrying knocks. I hope that things will turn out well in the end during this long week and that the boys will be fit to play on Sunday,” adds Gunkel.

After 14 games, Oberhausen have 24 points and a goal difference of 18:17. It’s clear where the problem lies. Gunkel: “We’re still not scoring enough goals. Our midfield and strikers are working very hard for the team. Maybe we’re lacking a bit of energy in front of goal. We need to keep working on that. But I would also like to emphasize at this point that I am satisfied with the boys.“

The 50-year-old Gunkel will also know that he has an attacker in his ranks in Christopher Schepp who ”just” needs to break his duck. Schepp, who moved from SV Meppen to Rot-Weiß Oberhausen in the summer of 2025, scored an impressive 25 goals in 69 games for SVM in two years. At RWO, the 1.92-meter striker is still waiting for his first goal after 15 competitive games. Maybe it will happen on Sunday against Bochum.
