Ahead of the home game against KSC, VfL Bochum fans can make donations. UB 99 is bringing joy to children and those in need through “Christmas from a Shoebox.”
The Ultras Bochum 1999 collected donations for a good cause again this Advent. The “Christmas from a Shoebox” campaign has been running since 2014. This time, the initiative was designed to benefit children in particular, though not exclusively, as the VfL Bochum fan group explains on flyers and on its website.
This editorial team learned that the Ultras were able to distribute roughly 400 filled shoeboxes last year. The goal for 2025 was to reach at least that many.
And that number was likely significantly exceeded this year. It is said to be a high three-digit figure. “Our ‘Christmas from a Shoebox’ campaign has collected more packages this year than probably ever before! Especially in times like these, you realize what solidarity can achieve,” the Ultras Bochum write.
The Ultras collect donations for the Bochum Soup Kitchen, the University Children’s Hospital (Catholic Hospital Bochum), and ViA Ruhr e.V., which supports young people in need of social assistance, the organizers explain. “In doing so, we are deliberately helping adults as well as children and teenagers who would particularly benefit from a little joy during this time,” the Ultras write.
Only certain gifts allowed for hospital children
There are clear guidelines for the shoe boxes intended for the hospital children: food, candy, or hygiene items are not allowed. Permitted items include toys, art and craft supplies, stuffed animals (only new and in their original packaging), books, and soft or anti-stress balls. The ViA Ruhr association recommends toys and small gift items.
Donors should label the boxes with “Soup Kitchen,” “Children’s Hospital – Boy/Girl,” or “ViA Ruhr – Boy/Girl.” On December 22, members of the Ultras plan to deliver the gifts in person.
