GSV Moers Withdraws Team – Here’s How the Standings Look After the Withdrawal

GSV Moers has been officially relegated from the Landesliga Niederrhein. The team has withdrawn. Here’s how this affects the promotion and relegation races.

Rumors had been circulating for some time, and on Monday they were confirmed: GSV Moers is withdrawing its first team from the Landesliga Niederrhein with immediate effect and is officially relegated.

A decision that could prove decisive in both the promotion and relegation races. All matches played will be annulled, and all teams that had beaten GSV Moers will have the three points deducted. The teams that had failed to beat GSV can now celebrate.

Signs of GSV Moers’ withdrawal were already apparent at the end of last year. Sports director Patrick Iwersen had resigned in November, and coach Dirk Warmann had already thrown in the towel weeks earlier. Speaking to the NRZ at the time, Iwersen said: “At some point, an imbalance arose between what I expected and what I was getting in return.”

Initially, GSV officials emphasized that the team, which was in the midst of a relegation battle, would continue playing in the Landesliga beyond the winter break. However, when more than 15 players announced their departure during the winter break, the withdrawal had long been anticipated in the soccer community. Additionally, the club had to cut costs, which also contributed to the players’ departures.

Points Table

The news from Moers is likely to have been met with great joy, especially by league leaders VfB Bottrop and second-place SV Scherpenberg. After all, Bottrop had only managed a 1-1 draw against Moers in the first half of the season, while Scherpenberg had lost 0-4. Now those two slip-ups are rendered obsolete. This hurts the previously third-place team, ESC Rellinghausen, the most, as they had defeated Moers 2-1.

Rellinghausen and fourth-place SV Budberg thus lose three points, while VfB Bottrop gains one point on paper, and SV Scherpenberg gains three.

Rellinghausen’s coach, Sascha Behnke, had anticipated the decision beforehand but can’t understand one thing: “There’s no point in getting upset. The question is, though, whether it’s really smart on the association’s part to let a team play through the winter break only to have the points deducted afterward. Everyone has played against them; everyone had the chance to score points against them. Why not just leave the points as they are?”

In the standings, this means that VfB Bottrop now has 40 points and a three-point lead over SV Scherpenberg. Rellinghausen now has 33 points, Budberg and Mintard 30.

The significance of GSV Moers’ withdrawal in the relegation battle

At the bottom of the table, Sportfreunde Niederwenigern can celebrate, even though they will now have a bye this coming weekend due to the withdrawal. Niederwenigern lost 2-3 to GSV Moers in the first leg. A result that no longer matters. More bitter is the decision for PSV Wesel-Lackhausen and FC Kray, who will now have three points deducted. SG Essen-Schönebeck, Rhenania Bottrop, and Mülheimer FC each lose one point.

In the standings, this means that Rhenania Bottrop remains firmly anchored at the bottom with just four points. Hamborn 07 sits in second-to-last place with 16 points, while Wesel occupies the last direct relegation spot with 12 points. FC Kray holds the relegation playoff spot with 14 points. Above them are Niederwenigern and SG Essen-Schönebeck with 16 points each, and Mülheimer FC with 17 points.
