In front of a large crowd, including a floodlight outage—Wattenscheid lets the win slip away in Lippstadt

SG Wattenscheid 09 drew 2–2 in the top-of-the-table clash at SV Lippstadt. The fans were treated to quite a show, including a long wait following a floodlight outage.

400 fans traveled with SG Wattenscheid 09 to the top match of the Westphalia Oberliga against SV Lippstadt. And the SG supporters had no reason to regret it. After a long evening in Lippstadt, they ultimately celebrated their team’s 2–2 draw—even if the final minutes were extremely bitter.

The match, played in front of 1,512 paying spectators—a great Oberliga turnout—had plenty to offer. Robert Nnaji (2nd minute) tested Lippstadt goalkeeper Luca Beermann early on.

Wattenscheid was also the better team in the first half. There weren’t any clear-cut scoring chances, but there were two goals. In order:

The 1–0 lead for SG in the 32nd minute: Fynn Wortmann and Ilias Anan applied heavy pressure up front, and Anan snatched the ball, kept his cool, and lobbed it in for the 1–0 lead. The 09 fans went wild and celebrated.

Then, just before halftime, came the shock: Nico Tübing outran Albin Thaqi and fired a shot on goal—Joshua Mroß could only watch helplessly: 1–1 in the 44th minute!

I think that, all in all, we saw an absolutely top-notch game. In the end, even though the goal came in the last minute, we deserved the win. The game was a great showcase for the Oberliga Westfalen

The second half was delayed. The floodlights had gone out. “We urgently need an electrician so the game can resume right away,” announced the Lippstadt stadium announcer at 8:18 p.m. at the Liebelt-Arena. Electricians were found, so play could resume shortly after 9:00 p.m.

The Wattenscheid team kept their composure and, through Nnaji (63′), scored again to take a 2-1 lead. This lead nearly held until the end—partly because Tübing (79′) missed a penalty kick awarded for a handball.

But then came the 97th minute: a Lippstadt corner kick and the 2–2 tie! Out of the scramble, Lukas Wulf scored for Lippstadt off the set piece to level the score, much to the crowd’s delight.

With 42 points after 18 games, the SG heads into a well-deserved winter break.

“I think that, all in all, we saw an absolutely top-notch game. In the end, even though the goal came in the last minute, we deserved it. The game was a great showcase for the Oberliga Westfalen,” summarized SVL sports director Dirk Brökelmann.
