Boss Gone – “…then the club will be deregistered the very next day”

FC Wegberg-Beeck has been a regular fixture in the Regionalliga West. Now, the club’s main sponsor and managing director—who held both roles—is stepping down.

Anyone who thinks of the Regionalliga West and FC Wegberg-Beeck will quickly come across the term “elevator club.” Time and again in the past, the Beeck team has bounced back and forth between the Regionalliga West and the Mittelrheinliga.

This season, it’s clear that promotion is out of the question. Sitting in tenth place, FC Wegberg-Beeck trails league leader Bergisch Gladbach 09 by 14 points.

Main sponsor and managing director Werner Tellers is now drawing his conclusions. He will step down at the end of the current season and will continue to support FC Wegberg-Beeck to a limited extent as a sponsor. “I will continue to oversee projects and sponsorship, but without the day-to-day responsibility,” he told “kicker.”

His departure was a decision he had been planning for some time: “It was an open secret that I would step down if we didn’t reach the Regionalliga. The decision has been in the works for years.”

He continued: “The Regionalliga would have brought new momentum and opened up sponsorship opportunities. But without realistic sporting prospects, the effort is no longer justified.”

Points Table

As managing director, he had also served as the go-to person for everything, Tellers continued: “In Wegberg, you’re not just a managing director. When toilets are clogged or tickets don’t fit, the phone rings at my desk. The structures aren’t professionalized and are a constant burden.” That, too, was a reason for his resignation.

An extraordinary general meeting will take place on Friday, February 6, at which a new chairman and managing director will be elected. “If we don’t find a new board, the club will be deregistered the next day,” Tellers explained.

In addition to his future role as a minor sponsor, the 59-year-old also wants to remain involved with the club as a spectator. He hinted at this. “I want to come to the game, eat a sausage, watch the game, and drive home. I won’t be running the club from behind the scenes.”
