Clear Victory for Verl, Aue on Edge, Drama Between Two Third-Division Teams

The state cup tournaments consistently offer third-division teams a good chance to advance to the DFB Cup. A lot happened on Saturday, November 15.

Things were heating up in the state cup competitions on Saturday, November 15. Take 1. FC Gievenbeck, for example, which was hoping to pull off a major upset against SC Verl in the Westphalia Cup. But the third-division team didn’t give the Oberliga side any room to breathe.

Fabian Witt had even put 1. FCG ahead after 41 minutes. Ultimately, though, Fynn Otto (45th min.), Dominik Steczyk (60th min.), and Alessio Besio (67th, 77th min.) sealed the deal. SC Verl is now through to the semifinals.

It was also a one-sided affair for Hansa Rostock, who were visiting Verbandsliga side Prenzliner SV in the Mecklenburg Cup. Emil Holten (27′), Paul Stock (38′, 40′), and Tim Krohn (59′, 79′) ultimately sealed the deal, sending Rostock confidently into the quarterfinals with a 5-0 victory.

Erzgebirge Aue, on the other hand, struggled. The third-division team ultimately scraped out a 1–0 victory against Lokomotive Leipzig, a top club in the Northeast Regional League. Marcel Bär scored the goal of the day in the 42nd minute. Aue has thus advanced to the quarterfinals of the Saxony Cup.

In addition, Regionalliga club SV Babelsberg gave FC Energie Cottbus a tough time in the Brandenburg State Cup. In the end, however, Cottbus secured a 4-2 victory. With this win, the Lusatians advance to the semifinals of the Brandenburg State Cup.

Earlier on Friday, there was a spectacular matchup in the Bavarian Cup. Two third-division teams, FC Ingolstadt and SSV Jahn Regensburg, faced off in the quarterfinals. And it was bound to be dramatic.

Jonas Scholz equalized for FC Ingolstadt in the 74th minute after Regensburg had taken a 1-0 lead through Benedikt Bauer (33rd minute). With no winner decided, the match went to a penalty shootout. In the end, however, SSV Jahn Regensburg prevailed 5–3, securing a spot in the Bavarian Cup semifinals alongside Regionalliga side Würzburger Kickers and league rival TSV 1860 Munich.
