Some of the favorites are still struggling in the 3rd Division. Right at the top of that list: TSV 1860 Munich, which really embarrassed itself on Sunday. The coach didn’t mince words.
4,000 TSV 1860 Munich fans traveled with their team to the 3rd Division away game against Jahn Regensburg, which had been relegated from the 2nd Division.
What they saw likely left most of them speechless. The “Lions” lost 0–4—going down without a fight. At halftime, the score was only 0–1, but even then the hosts had already had plenty of chances to build a more comfortable lead. As a result, the Munich team—which had been considered one of the favorites for promotion—has now found itself in a relegation battle for the time being.
They’re just two points above the first relegation spot, currently occupied by Erzgebirge Aue. It was their second loss in four games under new coach Markus Kauczinski. They have two home wins but have suffered two away losses. Above all, it was the manner of the defeat that frustrated the coach, who didn’t mince words in his interview with “MagentaSport.”
He spoke plainly: “I’m stunned. That was a total collapse from start to finish. We deserved to lose by that margin. Jahn Regensburg was superior in every respect. It starts with every single player. This was supposed to be a battle of attrition. But we didn’t rise to the challenge and always came up short. I can’t quite put my finger on it yet.”
If the team does end up fighting relegation, this squad—which was built to compete for promotion—doesn’t currently seem to possess the qualities that will be necessary then.
The opponent showed how it’s done. Regensburg provided a free master class on how to work your way out of a crisis.
Munier Raychouni, assistant coach of Jahn Regensburg, who filled in for the suspended Michael Wimmer, summed it up: “We dominated the game. Unfortunately, we only had one goal before halftime. But the game can swing either way after the break. We managed to break free from that and really ignite our play. That’s our job as the coaching staff!”
