SV Elversberg’s performances in the 3rd division are currently a source of amazement. You can only take your hat off to the first 17 games. Comment.
After their promotion to the 3rd division, SV Elversberg ranked 14th in terms of squad value. Nobody could have guessed what the Spielvereinigung would do in the new league.
Not even after the brilliant 5:1 win at Rot-Weiss Essen at the start, where it was rather thought that RWE – also after promotion – had not yet arrived in the new league.
In the course of the series, however, it became clear that the resounding victory in Essen was no coincidence. Coach Horst Steffen’s team is simply that good. Despite a smaller squad, despite the lack of experience in the 3rd Division. Sporting director Nils Ole Book, who has been doing a great job in the Saarland for years, should also be mentioned here.
The team promoted from the Regionalliga Südwest has achieved something that only a few clubs manage. In a league in which every metre is fought for, the Elversberg team has consistently been able to bring a respectable playful touch to the game.
The rewards are impressive figures: They already have a ten-point lead over the relegation place. Away from home, the team remained without defeat, at home there were two defeats, only 1. FC Saarbrücken and SC Verl were able to defeat the SVE.
Elversberg also scored by far the most goals (42), followed by SV Wehen with 33. The defence is also one of the best in the league. The SVE goal only rattled 14 times, only Saarbrücken is better here (13 goals conceded).
And the Elversberg team has also set a new record. Since the inception of the 3rd Division in 2008, no team has managed to have 41 points after 17 games.
SC Paderborn (2017/18 season) and Dynamo Dresden (2015/16 season) had 40 points, and both were promoted at the end of the season.
The Elversberg team doesn’t want to think that far ahead, they are still baking small rolls. But if there aren’t a lot of injuries all of a sudden and the club goes completely off course, then the city can look forward to SV Elversberg marching through to the 2nd Bundesliga.
