Second-division side Preußen Münster will have to do without starting goalkeeper Johannes Schenk in their upcoming league matches after he was sent off during the 0-0 draw against Schalke 04.
55 minutes had elapsed in last Saturday’s second-division match between Preußen Münster and FC Schalke 04 (0-0) when Münster’s goalkeeper Johannes Schenk rushed out of his goal and, as the last man, tackled S04 striker Moussa Sylla.
Referee Florian Lechner deemed it a professional foul and, after a brief pause, showed Schenk a red card. Despite playing a man down for a long stretch, SCP earned a well-deserved point against the second-place team from Gelsenkirchen, who struggled despite having an extra man.
Nevertheless, the red card naturally has consequences for coach Alexander Ende’s team. As the German Football Association (DFB) Sports Court ruled on Monday, the young goalkeeper was suspended for two league matches due to “unsportsmanlike conduct.”
The 22-year-old will therefore miss this coming Sunday’s derby against promoted side Arminia Bielefeld, as well as the home game against Hannover 96 five days later. Morten Behrens, who already stood in for Schenk after his red card against Schalke, will take his place between the posts.

And the regular number two was right up to the task against the Royal Blues and played a major role in preserving the 0-0 draw. Despite it being only his second second-division appearance for SCP, Münster’s backup goalkeeper gave the impression, with his carefree and confident demeanor, that he had been standing between the posts week after week.
“It wasn’t bad for a first-time start,” he said of his performance. The goalkeeper, who came up through the HSV youth system, added: “It’s the lot of a number two that you have to be ready to play at any time. When the time comes, you have to be there.”
SCP coach Ende shouldn’t have any major concerns, then, if he has to rely on his backup goalkeeper in the upcoming two league matches.
